Nokia has received green light from Brussel and intends to complete the acquisition of the GPS mapping company Navteq within 5 days.
“Navteq will play a key role in our strategy of developing our Internet services”, – Nokia boss Olli-Pekka Kalasvuo said . Nokia has agreed to buy Navteq for $8.1 billion last year.
The Finnish company intends to aggressively promote GPS-services for mobile phones, including relevant modules not only in relatively expensive smartphones, but also in mid-level phones. As part of the Internet initiative Ovi GPS-maps will be included in the social relationship of Internet users.
The main objective of the Finnish company – to turn GPS-navigators from devices dedicated for use in cars to devices for “personal usage”. Navteq will help Finnish company with its detailed maps.
Products of Navteq will remain available and for other potential clients.
