Mobile Phones sales down 6%, smartphones – up 27%

Gartner reports that in the second quarter of 2009 worldwide sales of mobile phones are 286.1 million units total, which is 6.1% lower than in the 2nd quarter of 2008. However, sales of smartphones in this period increased by 27%: overall 40.9 million of such devices were sold, while in April – June 2008 only 32 million.

As expected, the leading position in the market so far is the Nokia. But its share has decreased – from 39.5% to 36.8%. At the same time, Korean companies Samsung and LG only increased the sales of their mobile devices.

Sales of phones in the 2 nd quarter of 2009:

1. Nokia – 105,4 million devices, 36.8%
2. Samsung – 55,4 million devices, 19.3%
3. LG – 30,5 million devices, 10.7%
4. Motorola – 15,9 million devices, 5.6%
5. Sony Ericsson – 13,5 million devices, 4.7%
6. The rest – 65.2 million devices, 23%

Sales of smartphones in the 2 nd quarter of 2009:

1. Nokia – 18,4 million devices, 45%
2. Research In Motion – 7,6 million devices, 18.7%
3. Apple – 5,4 million devices, 13.3%
4. HTC – 2,4 million devices, 6%
5. Fujitsu – 1,2 million devices, 3%
6. The rest – 5.6 million devices, 13.9%
