Company Intel has first alpha version of Moblin 2 platform for netbooks. Moblin is an open source Linux-project, that was originally designed for netbooks based on Intel Atom. Moblin platform is currently being adapted by several Linux-distributors, including Linpus, GoS and Mandriva. They plan is to create customized derivatives based on the kernel Moblin.

Alpha version of Moblin 2 is tested on such netbooks as Acer Aspire One, Dell Mini 9 and Asus EEE PC 901 (Wi-Fi is not yet supported). It can run on systems with processors Intel Atom or Intel Core 2. At this time platform includes Xfce desktop environment with a standard kit including a package of light PIM-application Pimlico from OpenedHand.
Interestingly, the documentation on the Moblin’s official site noted that the end user interface will look much different and will not be based on Xfce. While the project is under construction and is not suitable for installation on netbooks, which is constantly being used and must be in working condition.
Source code of Moblin 2 alpha can be found in the repository of the project. Users can create customized images using Moblin Image Creator. Ready ISO image is also available, it can be used to boot from a CD or flash drive.
