LG does not exclude that announced back in February KT770 smartphone based on Symbian OS may not appear on the market. The company also noted that the smartphone could be seriously refined, especially the software part. In this case, the device will hit the market under another name.

Some experts believe that LG will abandon the production of devices running Symbian and will focus on Android and Windows Mobile. These assumptions are also confirmed by LG strategy, about which told the CEO Yong Nam.

Previously, LG had give preference to a mobile operating system from Microsoft and signed the partnership agreement earlier this year. However, given the favorable forecasts for Android and not very bright prospects for Windows Mobile LG decided not to take risks and produce smartphones either first, or on the second platform.

According to the Spanish website elmundo.es, company Motorola plans to abandon development of its own products based on the Symbian operating system and concentrate on the platform Android. The website names Oscar Rodriguez as the source, director of mobile units of Motorola in Spain.

He told the press that Motorola would suspend nearly all production in 2009 in order to prepare an entirely new line of smart phones based on Android to the Christmas season sales. He said that the company could show weak sales during three quarters, for the sake of big bets for the future.

Interestingly, in October Sanjay Jha mentioned that Motorola is not going to create new devices with Symbian UIQ, however, the company still is a member of the Symbian Foundation. Also according to earlier news, Motorola hopes to create phone based not only on Android in the future, but also “a strong portfolio of” Windows Mobile 7 devices.

By the results of the second quarter in the market of smartphones unexpected changes occured: Research in Motion (BlackBerry) is becoming more and more popular and it took second place leaving behind Windows Mobile and. First place is reserved for Symbian, it takes more than half of total sales.

Thus, the operating system on BlackBerry, which is, for the most part, to service only a niche group (although recently RIM is expanding its coverage), was much popular then Windows Mobile, which is positioned slightly wider.

The strongest sales growth are seen from the iPhone – 230% compared to sales of the same period last year, the number of devices – 828 thousand. On the other hand, sales of Linux-devices decreased by 16%. Overall, the market for smartphones increased by 15.7%, they still took 11% of all mobile phones.

Stats by Gartner.
